What will we be learning?
We will be learning how to prevent wordpress comment Spam using the Akismet Plugin. Akismet is a plugin that reduces the amount of spam comments you get in your WordPress website and allows you easily reject and hide these spam comments from the rest of your users.
Why is Preventing WordPress Comment Spam important? How can I benefit from this?
Well, Spam in any context is bad. The more spam you have, the more likely users will think of your website in a more negative light. Therefore, it is important to always provide the best user experience possible, which requires low comment spam.
So in this video, it’s just another extension of the 8 plugins that we were talking about before. But pretty much in a very general overview, we installed 8 different plugins and I said that these are the top 8 plugins that I think every new wordpress blog should at least install.
And so we already talked about a number of these individually because we ran out of time in the general overview video. So what we are going to be talking about now is Akismet. I believe that’s how you say. I am really not too sure how you say it. But it’s Akismet. And so this is made by automatic which is the makers of wordpress.
So you know it’s something that you can trust. But very. We talked about it briefly before, kind of what it generally did. Pretty much what it was is, it’s a comment moderation. I guess you could say a comment moderation plugin. And what it does is, you can see right here. It hasn’t been put into action yet.
But you can see, this is just a test right. Wpforalltv dot com. It’s just our test website. It’s what I use to show you guys how to design a website. And so all we have are I think two posts, right. Two posts that really, just say random text. But yeah, we have these spam comments on our website already. So you can imagine, well, what if you had a real website.
An actual blog or an actual website that had an option for people to comment on it. And you had numerous pages, numerous posts. How much spam would you actually have? So in this case you know, ya its ok you can click them.
We showed you before how to actually moderate comments, you know. You can mark it a spam, trash it and things like that. But you can imagine that if you have thousands of comments and. One of the websites I was running, I would be getting you know, 100 spam comments every single day.
And just because there was a lot of pages. There was a lot of pages because we had like a, you know, a short video on each of the pages. But you can imagine how many spam comments you can have and how I guess, annoying it could be.
So that’s kind of where this Akismet plugin comes into play. And so I will just show you what it is. I am already logged in on safari. So I will show you in chrome. Kind of what it is, it allows you to filter or. It doesn’t allow you, it does it itself.
So it filters out comments that are spam for you. So they, they have whatever algorithm that they actually have. You know, within their backend that they just track, you know the different spam that are, that are flagged as spam comments.
And they will just remove them for you. And there is two different options that you can actually remove it or and what. But I will show you those later. But you can see, you know, they. They remove 7 million spam comments every hour.
So there is a lot of spam on the internet. Alright so just to show you very quickly, plans and pricing. There is business, enterprise but there is also a personal account. And that’s all I use. I use a personal account because, you know. We are no commercial site.
We don’t need this and the personal account. It has the option to say, do you want to pay for it or do you want it to be free? And let me show you very quickly, it shows us this. But there is just, you know, option that it can. And so we have to actually sign in.
So I don’t want to show you all of that because I don’t want to sign in and sign out again. But you can specify how much you want to pay. It’s like a donation. You can pay, I think up to 36$. Or you can pay 0$. You know, for me, as of now, I just. You know, it’s a personal use and I am kind of just it, not very much in my opinion.
So I put 0$ for the donation. But you can put whatever donation you want. Right. So it wouldn’t be too beneficial to kind of go into all the features and how it works because, you know, even I don’t know how it works.
You know, it has its own algorithm that it does it. But it works. It works very well. So what I want to show you is how do you actually set it up. And so what we do first is we, obviously we have installed the Akismet plugin. And it will option right here. It will have this window right here.
As you can see, very few options for you to change. And where do you find it? That’s another thing. You find it in the jetpack if you do have jetpack installed. It’s under there. So you may not be able to find.
So where all the settings for the plugins generally are. They are generally below everything. Or they are in the settings itself. As you can see near the floating social bar or they can kind of be scattered up here. And so we see one here and one there.
So pretty much what it is. It has, initially there is no API key installed or shown. And so it will have an option that says, you know, get an API key now. And so you, you log in, if you have a wordpress dot com blog or account, its free to sign up.
You just do it like that. And you sign up and you get an API key. And then this is just your, I guess account or admin area. And as you can see I have a personal free account and your key is here. You just review it and you paste it into here.
And so, there is really only two options that you need to decide what you want to do. So show the number of approved comments beside each comment author. That doesn’t really matter. I mean, you don’t necessarily need to show people. Showcase if they have a lot of spam comments next to them. I don’t think it provides any benefit to your website.
Especially if you do get people who spam or are flagged to spam a lot, then it’s only going detract other users form wanting to add comments because they are just going to think that, well this must be just a spam website.
So, ya, that’s why I don’t necessarily think that this is beneficial to that checkbox. But between strictness is silently discard the worst and most pervasive spams so I never see it or always put the spam in the spam folder for review.
So obviously this first one is a little bit more strict than the second one. But I choose the second one simply because well what if, I, for some reason, I don’t know if, for some reason I wanted to look through the spam folder, I could do that. I could do that to maybe find, maybe is there a comment in there that Akismet program flagged a spam but in reality it wasn’t spam and it was actually useful.
I could you know, move it back from the spam box now to a approved comment. And it says that all spam, all spam is deleted after 15 days. So at the end of the day, it would be deleted if I don’t get to it, but at least I have that option. And you just save it.
And that’s literally all you have to do, you know. There is nothing more to the plugin than that. You know, you can actually, I believe either in the upgraded account or in your account, once it starts working, then it will actually show you the number of comments that were marked as spam and things like that.
But ya, it kind of like just works in the background without you having to actually change anything. So ya, this kind of, this video will double as how do you manage spam with plugins and also kind of just a tutorial of how do you use this Akismet plugin.
And there are other ones but in my opinion this is the best one simply because, it is very very simple to use and it’s free.
